ABOUT BENAKA


In 1974, B V Karanth started BeNaKa a repertory in Bangalore. Benaka was an acronym for Bengalooru Nagara Kalavidaru. Benaka stages several hugely popular plays like Hayavadana all across Karnataka and even overseas. At Benaka, Karanth also took a special interest in children's theatre and directed several plays with children. This group has been taken care of by Prema Karanth, Karanth's late wife and a noted theatre personality in her own right. She died on 29-10-07.

Benaka Theatre Troupe came into existence in the year 1974 under the guidance of International theatre legend and the pioneer of amateur theatre in Karnataka late Sri. B.V. Karanth. From its inception the troupe has been staging Kannada plays having social impact and depicting dynamic nature of Socio-Cultural scenario.

'Benaka' has been performing all over the country for the last three decades with major productions to its credits like 'Sattavara Neralu' (more than 500 performances), 'Hayavadana' (more than 100 performances) & 'Jokumaraswamy' ( more than 200 performances) 'Kattle Belaku', 'Tabarana Kathe', 'Hamlet', 'Kage Kunitha', 'Yamaranjane'. and grand revival of Pu.Ti. Narasimhachar's poetical  play 'Gokula Nirgamana', the master piece of the director late. Sri. B.V. Karanth.

Sri. B.V. Karanth was a legendary theatre person; he designed a wonderful presentation with his visual imagination and unique narration. The contents of his plays are contemporary and relevant even to this date.
